Another great Tuesday! Today we had lots of
adventures and definitely lots of exploring. At the end of our session we
shared what we did with a buddy and then we shared back as usual. Today we had a
great discussion about floating and sinking. Some of the children choose to
make a boat, testing different materials and shapes to find the best floater.
Dayton and Seiaemoe shared what they made and how they did it. Here are some
photos of our sharing time.
Here are some of the words we discussed today…
Expand – we talked
today about the different materials Dayton and Seiaemoe used when making their
boats. Seiaemoe used paper and Dayton used ice block sticks. To start with
Seiaemoe’s boat did float but then … it sank as the water caused the paper to crumple.
The ice block sticks were made of wood. The wood expanded in the water. (This
means it got bigger)During our discussion time, Shanayah was very interested in
this word. She knew she didn’t know it so put up her hand to find out more
about it.
Camouflage - This morning before school Dayton found four little ladybirds. Dayton loves bugs. We have been watching insect videos and reading about them when we have a chance. This morning we found some magnifying glasses and the children set off around the trees by Room 24. Dayton and Fayth found a cicada that was camouflaged against the trees. They checked it out with the magnifying glass and then set it free. We love the photo of the children explaining cicadas and our exploring to Nurse Lynn.
Balance - Today the cars were a hit. The boys created race tracks, had races, tested who had the fastest and then created ramps to do jumps with their cars. Kalahata decided to attempt balance his car on the play ground as he drove it. He tried going slowly then fast, to see what made the car balance better on the ledge.
Here is some more exploring we did today...
Insect hunters - Room 24 is full of entomologists in the making.
Floating and sinking – some of the children
predicted then tested what could float and what would sink.
Craft and painting table - we had lots of fun creating today.
We introduced new animal and dinosaur equipment today. Charlie and Azaelea created an African safari on the mat in Room 24.
Mele and Levi enjoyed the new pretend insect collection.
Starlite was very happy sewing today and created a beautiful necklace.
Caleb and Makaira experimented with the chalk and were designing amazing patterns.
Every Thursday morning Room 24 has cricket with the
Papatoetoe cricket club coaches. We have been learning catching and batting
skills. Last week we played non-stop cricket and practised all our new skills.
