Imaginative Tuesday

Another great Tuesday in Room 24.

Today was all about using our imagination!

This morning Mrs Fulford shared some photos of different creations that she found on pinterest. People had used cardboard boxes to create car garages, shops, doll houses, play houses and marble runs. We sat in our sharing circle and discussed the different creations. During writing today the children who wanted to create something with the boxes used a design sheet to plan what they were making. The children needed to think about what it was and what they needed to create it. Here are some examples of their work...

During our exploring time children got their design plans and started creating. Here are the photos and stories about what they created...

Hayleigh was very excited about her project and spent a lot of time this morning planning what she wanted to make. It is a doll's house which she painted pink!

Joseph loved creating and exploring today. He made lots of things out his box. First it was a house then it was a hiding place (if you look carefully you can see him hiding in the box) He decided to turn it into an egg and to become MUTO (an alien from outer space that attacks earth in a movie he loves)Joseph climbed into the box and got the children to cellotape him in. All of a sudden ... he hatched. So much laughter and encouragement from the other children watching. Watch this great video of MUTO (Joseph) hatching.

Mrs Fulford was so impressed with the focus and the great perseverance Quanitah showed today. She decided to make a marble run out of a cardboard box and tubes. She had several false starts but never gave up and kept trying. Mrs Fulford was watching Quanitah and suggested she used the glue gun to stick the tube on. After that she was away!

Tekau decided to make a garage to park our toy cars. He planned how he was going to do it, found the perfect boxes and cardboard. Tekau made a great garage which he happily tested with our toy cars. The last picture is the inspiration he used to create his masterpiece.

Shanayah and Rose decided team work and collaboration were the way to go today.  They were creating a barbie dream house. Shanayah was so excited about it that she kept testing it with furniture, equipment and herself.

Sarah also showed great perseverance, reflection as well as being a great thinker today. She knew what she wanted to create but was a little unsure about how to make it. She never gave up and kept trying to get the vision in her brain into the cardboard in front of her. By the end of the session she knew how she wanted it to look and how she would do it. Well done Sarah!

Here is a video of Sarah's focus and the collaboration between Shanayah and Rose.

Room 24's marvelous medicine -  In Room 24 we have just started reading George's marvelous medicine. George makes a potion to make his horrible grandmother explode or get nicer. Today Azaelea, Pele, Alyssia, Fayth, Mele and Agnes decided to make their own marvelous medicine. Mrs Fulford gave the girls several cups with coloured water in them. The girls made potions to explode 'Grandmother' Agnes. Mrs Fulford was giggling when she saw 'Grandmother' Agnes hobbling around with an imaginary cane while yelling at the children. The girls seemed quite delighted to be making a potion to make her nicer. When Agnes needed to leave to go home early, Mele happily took her place.

Another exciting discovery the girls made was about dilution. As the girls played they added water to the dye in cups and spread the liquid out among other cups. The girls realised that as they put more water in the cup the colour of the dye became lighter. The were diluting the colour by adding more water.

Determination - Syriah and Makaira enjoyed playing with our new blocks. They followed the instructions in the manual. Syriah created a cool looking truck. Makaira showed particular determination when he was building and the table got knocked at a crucial stage of the building, making his structure tumble down. He smile at Mrs Fulford and started again! Well done Makaira - what great resilience you showed!

Catamaran - Using the recycled equipment Kalahata and Dayton were inspired to create boats using the plastic boxes and containers. Both were excited to test them. Kalahata created a great looking catamaran. A catamaran is a boat with two equal sized hulls like this...

Here is Kalahata's catamaran...

Here is Dayton boat... It was a great floater!

Mercy, Olivia and Seiaemoe spent lots of time in the Imagination space It was previously known as "The quiet room". We renamed it because Mrs Fulford has moved some things in there to inspire our imaginations. Keep watching this space as Mrs Fulford has big plans for the space.

Exploring - Today Starlite showed all the beautiful skills we are learning as we explore. She experimented with different activities and tried new things. Starlite spent time in the mud kitchen, skateboarding around the road that Tekau and Caleb created, played with the cars and finally played with the hula hoop. Mrs Fulford was excited to see Starlite practising with the hula hoop. To start with she was using her whole body (which looked like a lot of fun) Then she tried to just move her hips. She shouted triumphantly when she mastered twirling the hula hoop.

Finally Mrs Fulford was particularly pleased with Mercy's writing today. While it is not about our actual exploring day, Mercy has managed to explain why we do play based learning in Room 24.

Exploring Tuesday

Have you ever had an exploring day? Well luckily we do. You might not know but playing can actually help your brain grow and that is what our school wants. So this afternoon our class will be exploring but I’m thinking about making a treasure map and crumpling up some tinfoil because it’s shiny and it’s hard. I am going to pretend the tinfoil is treasure for our treasure hunt. Also I am interested in painting as well. Painting is also so much fun.
