Imagine books

Room 24 are reading Harry Potter and the philosopher stone at the moment and loving it!
Every day when we read our novel we are allowed to choose 1 of 3 things to do. We can…
  • Read along with our copy of the novel
  • Listen to Mrs Fulford reading
  • Draw what we hear in our imagine books

Here are some photos of our drawing about Harry Potter in our imagine books.

Poem of the week

Every week Room 24 has a new poem. We practise reading it, talk about the interesting vocabulary and then illustrate it in our poetry book.
This week our poem is by Jill Eggleton – Fussy Uncle Wunkle.

Fussy Uncle Wunkle says,
“It is very rude,
to slurp
and slop,
and drip
and drop,
and mess around
with food.”

Fussy Uncle Wunkle says,
“It’s not good at all,
to gobble
quick,
and lick
and flick,
your peas onto
the wall.”

Here are some of our illustrations in our poetry books.

Water safety week

This week during community swimming lessons it was water safety week. It is a favourite time with the children because we get to use the life jackets. This was the first time Room 24 had experienced water safety week and they loved it!
We learnt three new important skills.

Pindrop – This is important when we are getting safely into the water from a large height. The children needed to cross arm over their body and hold their nose with their other hand. Here is what we learnt.

Backdrop – We use this technique when we are dropping into shallow water. Again we crossed our arm over our body and held our nose but this time we were seated, facing backwards.

Huddle – We use this when we are in the water waiting for help. There are three important reasons for the huddle. Warmth, safety and staying together.

Saturn

This week we are going to learn about Saturn and then write a report. Here are some videos to help our learning.

Although the next video is not about Saturn, it is about one of Room 24's burning questions - can we walk on a gas giant?

Report writing on Mars

Last week we shared a blog post about our research on Mars. This week we wrote our reports. Here are some great examples.

Mars

Have you heard about the red planet before? So let me tell you all about it. Did you know that Mars is named after the Roman god of war! Mars has the biggest volcano in our solar system. Do you know that the volcano is called Olympus Mons and it is 3 times taller than Mount Everest. Guess what it takes Mars 687 days to spin around the sun. Some scientists think life can exist on this red planet. I think Mars is an interesting planet.

Have you been to Mars? Well let me tell you about it. Mars is the 2nd littlest planet in the solar system. Mars is a dry, hot planet and we can not live there.

Have you been to Mars? Well let me tell you about it. Mars is the 2nd smallest planet in our solar system. Mars is the fourth planet from the sun. It has the biggest volcano in our solar system. Mars has two moons. We have not been to Mars.

Ideas for exploring

Last week during our discussion time at the end of exploring Mrs Fulford and Mrs Martin asked the children if they had any activities they wanted to add to our exploring time.

Shardaye would like to paint using different things instead of paint brushes so the teachers suggested she start collecting things for us.

Jordan wanted to create a mini golf course so here is some inspiration for him.

Mrs Fulford noticed it has been very windy lately so is bringing a kite to fly on Tuesday. Here is some video for inspiration about flying and making kites.

What ideas do you have? What else could we do?

Cook Island language week celebration assembly

This week we celebrated Cook Island language week at BMPS. As part of this we had a celebration assembly on Friday to share what we have learnt and all things Cook Island. The children are invited to dress in their cultural finery. Here is a photo of the children in Room 24 who wear their cultural dress.

As part of our assembly Katy choose some children from Room 24 to perform on stage. Quanitah, Rose and Shanayah represented us. Here are some videos of their beautiful ura (dancing)

Mars - The Red Planet

This term Room 24 are learning to write reports. Next week we are will be writing a report on Mars. Our reports will need an introduction, facts and a conclusion. Our facts will be categorised into 2 parts – where Mars is and what is looks like.
So that we have enough information to make our reports interesting Room 24 are using this video. We will be note taking (getting key words) then we will sort these key words into categories.

Here are some other interesting videos about Mars.

Swimming week 3

Swimming this week was so much fun. We have been split into three different groups working on skills that suit our different abilities. The swimming instructors have a set of skills they are teaching us. Here is a photo of what their goals for us are.

Group one is working on safe entry into the pool, floating and kicking across the pool. Here are some photos and videos of their learning.

Group two is working on safe entry into the pool and streamline. Here are some photos and videos of their learning.

Group three is working on safe entry into the pool, stroke, kicking and breathing technique. They are working in the first lane of the big pool (with trampolines so they can reach the ground) Here are some photos and videos of their learning.

Exploring!

We love exploring – even when it rains!

This week we have changed our timetable around a bit. On Tuesday we went on a trip to a show called Whetu and Nick so we explored on Monday instead.
But Monday rained! We were all inside but that didn’t matter to us. There were about 50 of us in Room 24 and 25. Here is a video so you can see how focused and quiet it is with 50 children in a small space.

Cook Island Language Week - This week we are celebrating Cook Island language week. Mrs Martin and Mrs Fulford introduced several activities with a Cook Island focus. We had strips of card, paper, flowers and coloured card. We were able to make an ‘Ei katu using Mrs Fulford precious one as a model. Here is a picture of Lila wearing Mrs Fulford's one.

Here is a photo of Syriah creating her 'Ei katu and wearing the gorgeous final product.

We also created beautiful cards inspired by the tiare flowers of Rarotonga.

Another activity inspired by Cook Island language week was sewing tivaevae. Mrs Taylor worked with a group of children to sew their own tivaevae patterns.  The children definitely showed lots of perseverance but the finished products were beautiful. Here is our tivaevae inspiration.

Our last Cook Island inspired activity was dancing. Mrs Fulford put Cook Island music on the smartboard and some of us danced along with it.

Beyblades - This week Babylon brought his blayblade to school. He was practising his spinning skills when Mrs Fulford suggested he make a beyblade challenge arena. Babylon said he had no one to challenge so Mrs F suggested that he make a beyblade with someone so they could play together. Levi was keen so the boys worked together to create a beyblade out of our construction material and a spare marble. The boys problem solved, negotiated and communicated to make it. Here are some photos and a video.

Construction - as always, it is a hit. The children made all sorts of different creations. Alyssia, Olivia and Ana worked together to create cocoa, strawberries and a cupcake out of packing peanuts, recycling and paint.

Tenpin bowling - This week some of the boys were playing with the cars. They created a ramp using books, this then turned into a bowling ally with construction equipment. Very cool!

Here are some photos of our exploring adventures...
